On National Aboriginal Day (June 21st), we celebrated the cultures and contributions of the Métis, First Nations and Inuit people of Canada at the Spirit Square. We sold bison burgers and smokies cooked by Mike Kubinec and served by Joan LaTrace and Lisa Maloney. Jackie and Charlotte Lever set up a tent to sell tickets for the burgers and sold sashes, t-shirts, flags, pins and other stuff. Maddy McCallum was invited to perform at the Big House and at Spirit Square, Nathaniel Arcand came with her. There was a fantastic crowd for the event, thanks to all the members who attended. Don’t forget Aboriginal Day on June 21, 2015.
NIMN hosted a free beading workshop for members at the Robron Centre on June 7th from 1-4pm. Keith showed us how to create embroidered and woven Metis designs using beads. It was lots of fun and those who attended decided they would like to get the chance to learn more about beading. We will be gathering again on Thursday, June 12th at the NIMN office in the Robron Centre.
On Saturday, May 10th, NIMN hosted an edible garden demonstration at the CSWM Compost Education Centre in Campbell River. Elaine Jansen taught us how easy it is to make an edible garden and about the benefits of composting in your own backyard. She also shared her secrets on how to grow the best tomatoes.
On April 24th, the Inter Tribal Health Authority eye care team (Nelson and Chantel) came up to Campbell River (Robron Centre) to complete the TeleOpthalmology eye care appointments we were booking at our AGM in March. Our members had retinal images taken of their eyes. The doctors will use these images to check for issues such as diabetes and glaucoma. We had a full day of appointments. It was such a success that we are considering have them come back up this Fall sometime to allow members who did not get their eyes tested to have an opportunity. If you didn't get your eyes tested and wish to be a part in the Fall, contact us through email or phone. For more information about what TeleOphthalmology is, go to the ITHA info site.
