Scholarships, Bursaries & Awards

Most Indigenous funding requires that you are a current member of a local Métis nation. You need to be able to get verification of your ancestry or provide a copy of your Métis card.

Each post-secondary institution will have a list of its own scholarships, bursaries & awards, so make sure you check their websites for information. Only funding available to Métis students regardless of post-secondary institution will be listed below.

The Métis Nation British Columbia administers the Métis Employment & Training Program (METP) to improve the employment potential, earning capacity and self-sufficiency of Métis people in British Columbia. Go to their website for more information. ​​
London Drugs Aboriginal Partnership Bursary Program https://www.londondrugs.com/aboriginal-partnership-bursary-program/apbp.html
London Drugs offers six $500 bursary for students in the Westbank, Duncan and Campbell River areas. Applicant must be 25 or under and be a first year student. Students must be enrolled or plan to enroll as a full-time student in a program with a minimum length of nine weeks, leading to a post-secondary credential. Students must be from North Island Métis, Westbank First Nation, Cowichan Tribes, Wei Wai Kum, Homalco, Kwiakah, Klahoose, Mamalilikulla-Qweqwasotem Band, Tlowitsis Tribe, or We Wai Kai Nation. This award is offered annually, but the website is not always available. Usually the bursary is offered between April - June.

The Irving K. Barber British Columbia Scholarship Society offers many different awards and scholarships. The Ike Barber Transfer Scholarship is for students transferring into a new post-secondary institution after two years of study ($5000 over two years). The BC Indigenous Student Award is for Indigenous students working towards their Bachelors, Masters or Doctoral degrees ($1000 - $5000 annually). If you are going into a teacher education program, there is an Indigenous Teacher Education Award ($5000 annually)
First Citizens Fund Student Bursary http://bcaafc.com/education/
The First Citizens Fund Student Bursary Program provides funding to students of Indigenous ancestry to help support their post secondary education. It's funded by the Province of British Columbia and delivered by the BC Association of Aboriginal Friendship Centres. Indigenous students that are ordinarily resident in British Columbia and are enrolled full time in a recognized post-secondary university or college in a minimum two-year program are eligible to apply for a First Citizens Fund student bursary.  The level of assistance will be determined by need and will reflect the amount of assistance received from other sources.  The maximum level of assistance is $700/year for Band or Tribal Council funded students and $2,000/year for non-funded students.  
BC Hydro Aboriginal Scholarships

Indigenous scholarships are awarded to selected B.C. Indigenous students currently enrolled in a full-time post-secondary institution or students in Grade 12 planning to pursue a full-time public post-secondary education within Canada. Eight $1500 Indigenous scholarships, available to individuals who are status/non status Indians, Inuit or Métis and are residents of B.C. who plan to enroll in a full-time public post-secondary institution in Canada. Students pursuing an education in technology or engineering will be considered priority applicants, however general admission students are encouraged to apply. One $2,000 Randy Brant Memorial scholarship based on a combination of academic achievement and outstanding community involvement.

Modern Métis Woman provides yearly university scholarships to qualifying self-identifying Métis women. 
United Church Endowment Fund

The Endowment Fund for Indigenous Post-Secondary Education was established to help support Indigenous youth seeking to enter or continue post-secondary education. The Endowment Fund is a yearly scholarship that is available to Indigenous youth (18‒29 years old) enrolled in full-time post-secondary studies. Their priority is for students demonstrating both financial need and academic excellence. The scholarship may be awarded for multiple years to support the studies of selected candidates. The application and all supporting documents are due by March 15th each year.
Indigenous Forestry Scholarship Program https://www.forestrycouncil.ca/cpages/ifsp
BC First Nations Forestry Council's Indigenous Forestry Scholarship Program (IFSP) provides support for Métis students interested in attending full-time studies in a designated post-secondary institution. The program provides tuition and living scholarship, paid summer work-term experience with BC Timber Sales and one-on-one mentorship and support from your local Indigenous Skills and Employment Training Program centre. IFSP is for Indigenous students attending full-time studies in the following applicable areas: Forestry Technician, Natural Resources, Environmental Technology, Business Management, Business Administration, Geographic Information Systems, Forestry Trades (Construction Millwrights and Industrial Mechanics, Logging Machine Operator, Skidder Operator, Heavy-duty Mechanics)

The Law Society offers various scholarships for Indigenous graduate students in a field of law.

Learning Resources

NIMA Resources 
Métis Colouring Book
North Island Métis had created a colouring book. Every letter of the alphabet has a Métis themed colouring page. Each image included a bit of background history about the word as well as Michif word translations and pronunciation. The entire book can be downloaded or individual letters or activities can be downloaded.

Pre-School Resources
The MNBC Imagination Library is a literacy program that focuses on Métis children 5 years of age and younger. Each child receives their own age-appropriate book each month. If you would like to register your children to receive books from the Imagination Library please complete the application form.

MNBC's Métis Early Years has created a learning resource called Learn with Louis. A new issue will be shared every Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter. Each issue will include family-friendly educational content on Métis culture, including Métis traditions, language and activities.
