Housing
UPDATE: JUNE 2024
On April 16th, 24 an announcement was made by MNBC and the City of Campbell River in regards to the housing project. NIMA continues to work in partnership with MNBC on this development.
The newly acquired properties are located at 11, 23, 35, and 47 Dogwood Street in Campbell River. The current property, 834 Island Hwy South, has been put up for sale to pay for the
new properties. When planning the original development, we realized it would not be a large enough space for our needs for housing, childcare, and cultural space for NIMA. We paused the project and began to search for alternate properties. After a discussion with the City of Campbell River, the opportunity to relocate the development to Dogwood Street came to light. Due to a non-disclosure agreement in this process, we have been unable to share the news with you until now.
The new plans for the development will include approximately 40 rental apartments (1-, 2-, & 3-bedroom units), a 61-space childcare facility, and approximately 3,000 sq ft of cultural gathering and office space for NIMA.
The process for this development has not changed. We are not taking names for lists yet, but once we get closer to completion, we will be sure to let NIMA members know and make clear the rules around accessing these units and services.

NIMA is proud to announce a partnership with MNBC to build a Métis centre in Campbell River. The site will include below-market rate rental housing for Métis families, a Métis child care centre, and office space for NIMA. We will be working with M'akola Development Services to build this project. The property at 834 Island Hwy S has been purchased for this project.
NIMA will provide more details about all of these new developments as we are able to. There is much planning to be completed as NIMA is at the very beginning of this work. Please note that no decisions have been made about specific details for the housing development. This is a long process so decisions about eligibility for potential renters and child care attendees are further in the future. Stay tuned as we will share news and information as often as possible.
“We are excited to work with MNBC to begin the process of building affordable Métis housing. This is the next step for North Island Métis (NIMA) in supporting our community and strengthening our nation. NIMA is looking forward to working with all of our partners to provide a center for all NIMA activities and services in Campbell River.” - Tyler Massee, NIMA President

MNBC Funded Programs
MFCBC First-Time Homebuyers Program
The MFCBC First-Time Home Buyer Program (FTHBP) is for Métis Citizens in British Columbia who are purchasing their first home. It is a one-time grant to provide financial assistance with the down payment and closing costs associated with the purchase of their first home.
Ma Nîķi Métis Home Renovation Program
This program will provide up to $20,000 per Household in the form of a non-repayable grant, provided the homeowner(s) retains ownership of their home for at least five years from receipt of the grant. If the house is sold before five years from the approved grant date, MNBC reserves the right to ask for the grant to be immediately repaid in full.
Métis Housing Rent Supplement Program
This program will support Métis citizens with rent supplement payments for a temporary period. There is a required check-in for a housing support review after 6 months. In the sixth month, the applicant must complete and submit a housing need questionnaire to continue receiving supplement support payments.
The purpose of the questionnaire is to determine the need for additional support to MNBC services or programs and provide an opportunity to work with the applicant toward rent stability.
The Rent Supplement will pay 30% of the tenants' monthly rent amount directly to the applicant, with a maximum yearly amount of $5700.00 ($475.00 monthly)
The rent supplement program is a non-taxable benefit, but citizens are expected to report any payments from this program as they may affect Guaranteed Income Supplement payments & income assistance payments.
The Reaching Home Program
The Reaching Home Program aims to address the increasing issue of homelessness and housing instability by providing housing loss prevention and housing stabilization services to citizens of Métis Nation BC and those who self-identify as Métis.
